Lots of why's for this post in my head, running around. I also contemplated several titles, including Turkey...it's what is for dinner, why did the turkey cross the road, lots of titles. But, since Natalie has read Where the Wild Things Are very recently, this one popped into mind.
It started as a normal walk after dinner. One of our routines is to take Rosco for a walk. And, this time, Laci was here too. Normal to take the girls, Poppa, Woody, and me with the dogs. We normally travel down an abandoned road near our house. There are some construction crews working there every weekday, and this was no exception. I had heard truck after truck of gravel or dirt go by that day.
So, we walk about 1/3 of a mile down the hill as we normally do. Rosco is let off the leash as he likes to roam back and forth smelling different smells and doing doggie activities. Natalie was having fun running around with Rosco. Nicole had been walking, but Woody put her on his shoulders for a rest time. Poppa was walking Laci on a leash. I was walking back with him, soaking it all in. Suddenly, there was a noise from the side of the road where the grass was a bit taller. A horrible squaking and other noise. And, that's when we saw her. A mother turkey popped up and began chasing Rosco away. She then went towards Natalie and Natalie ran away terrified. I grabbed Natalie's hand and ran with her, hoping to distance myself from the dogs and the action. However, this turkey did not stop but followed us instead of going after the dogs. It was like Jurassic Park with the raptors in my mind. It's beady eyes and head seemed to dart around, following us. I definitely began getting scared for both Natalie and me. We alternated running and walking, trying to get away. The turkey would dart at us, then run into the woods. Then, it would dart back at us. I didn't know when it would stop. I didn't know what it would do! I thought it would return to protect the nest. Natalie and I made it back to the house safely without any direct attack, but we were both shaken. I begged Woody to go back and take care of the beast. I suggested sending one of his coworkers who was a hunter for it as well. I wanted to take a shotgun down and do the deed myself. For, we had seen this turkey in our front yard that week earlier, but it had run away at that point.
So, the turkey is on my list for things that have attacked in my life. All the rest have been dogs in my experience. All I can say is that if I see it again, it will be definitely a memory on this earth!
